Staad introduces electric 23-ton crawler excavator developed entirely in the Netherlands: the STAAD 23LCR

24 March 2026

Veghel – 24-03-2026 – Machine manufacturer STAAD is taking a new step in the electrification of earthmoving equipment with the introduction of the STAAD 23LCR , an electric 23-ton crawler excavator that was fully developed and built in the Netherlands. The STAAD 23LCR was awarded the IF Design Awards 2026 earlier this year. This machine is the logical successor following the successful introduction of the electric mobile excavator STAAD 17W , which attracted significant attention at international trade fairs last year and also won an award at the IF Design Awards.

According to Managing Director Pieter Staadegaard, this new machine was also designed based on a clear market demand: compact, powerful, and efficient. “At the request of the market, we have made it as compact as possible. It is not a zero-tail swing excavator, but the swing radius is quite short,” says Staadegaard.

Running a full workday on a battery

The STAAD 23LCR was developed with one central goal: to run for a full workday on a battery that can be charged anywhere overnight , without expensive fast chargers or buffer batteries. Staad based this design on extensive data from 285 previously converted electric machines , giving the company precise insight into where energy consumption occurs and where optimization is possible.

A notable innovation is the new hydraulic system developed in collaboration with Bosch Rexroth. When the operator lowers the boom, the hydraulic pump temporarily acts as a motor and feeds power back to the electric motor. “The hydraulic pump then temporarily functions as a motor that drives the electric motor and generates power instead of consuming it,” described. This regenerative system delivers continuous energy gains during operation. earth moving. earth saving .

Powerbox 400: power source and power bank

The machine is powered by the interchangeable Powerbox 400 with a capacity of 400 kWh. This can be charged overnight via a standard 32A three-phase power connection. A new feature is that the machine can also charge bi-directionally, allowing, for example, an electric vibratory plate or mini excavator to be charged on the construction site directly from the excavator.

Modular construction and fully equipped

Just like the STAAD 17W, the 23LCR also has a modular design. Many components are identical, which increases production efficiency and reliability. Thanks to the efficient drive, the machine can still run for a full workday with a 25% smaller battery . Staad deliberately opts for a full-option approach: frequently used options are integrated as standard. Examples include:

  • extra hydraulic functions
  • pressureless return
  • integrated toolbox
  • automatic grease lubrication on the upper carriage
  • GPS preparation
  • AI-driven 360° camera system with work area illumination
  • luxury cabin with heated and cooled seat with massage function

“Incorporating these options into the original design is much cheaper and better than building them on afterwards in the workshop,” says Staadegaard.

Strong market start
Even before the brochure has been printed, the first fifteen machines have already been sold to regular customers. Together with the mobile STAAD 17W, the new 23LCR crawler excavator forms a powerful duo within the popular weight classes for electric earthmoving machines.
